UNIVERSAL APPLIANCE AND KITCHEN CENTER AND AGOURA, CA

The unincorporated community of Agoura is located near Agoura Hills, California, taking its name for the historical area name. Much of this area was developed before the city of Agoura Hills was incorporated. Agoura has a long history as the “Vegar Junction” stagecoach stop was here and in the 1920s it was referred to as Picture City.

This is due to the Paramount Ranch where Paramount Pictures filmed western movies and outdoor scenes.

In order to install its own post office, the residents needed to choose a one word name, and it was determined to be Agoura in 1927. This was the last name of local French Basque settler, Pierre Agoura who arrived in 1871 and styled himself as Don Pierre Agoura. However, it is unknown whether the final letter was changed to make it easier to pronounce or if it was an error. 

In 1982, Agoura Hills was incorporated, leaving the remaining unincorporated areas to be identified as Agoura.
